GURGAON: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her parents and brother in her flat in Sector 102 and the body cremated in a Jhajjar village 50km away in what police described as a case of “honour killing”.
Police said Anjali‘s family was upset with her since she decided to marry a man from a different caste. Her husband, Sandeep, had gone to his sister’s place in the city for a ritual when the trio allegedly murdered her. Anjali’s father, Kuldeep, her mother Rinki and brother Kunal were arrested following a complaint by Sandeep.
Anjali had married Sandeep after years of courtship on December 19 last year. Her family was against the relationship, but the duo stuck to their decision of tying the knot. While Anjali was from a Jatt family, Sandeep is a Brahmin. Both the families are originally from Surheti village in Jhajjar.
After their marriage, Sandeep took up the job of a bouncer at a pub in the city while Anjali – a BSc graduate – was a homemaker.
For the past few days, Kunal and his wife had been putting up with Anjali and Sandeep at their flat in ROF Society.
“On Thursday morning, I left for my sister’s house for a ritual. My brother-in-law and his wife were there in the flat with Anjali,” Sandeep said in his complaint at Dhankot police station.
Around 1pm, Sandeep said, a villager from Surheti told him that Anjali had died and her family were cremating her at their hometown. Refusing to believe the caller, Sandeep rushed to his flat, but found it locked from outside. He broke the door open to enter the flat.
“Anjali was nowhere to be found. Clothes and household items were strewn on the floor. I tried calling up my in-laws, but couldn’t reach out to them. My worst fears were about to come true,” he added.
An FIR was registered against Kuldeep, Rinki and Kunal at Dhankot police station under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence) and 34 (common intention).
Preliminary investigation revealed that Anjali’s parents decided to kill her after repeated attempts to persuade the woman not to marry Sandeep failed. They allegedly sent Kunal and his wife to stay with the newly married couple for a few days so that they knew when Sandeep was away from home.
The trio allegedly wrapped the body up with clothes and bedsheets and carried it on their shoulders to a car waiting in the compound. They rushed to Surheti village, where Anjali was cremated in haste so that there was no evidence.
“It appears to be a case of honour killing. Further investigation is underway,” said Varun Dahiya, ACP (crime).
