GURGAON: The driver of a fuel tanker moving in the wrong side of the Delhi-Mumbai expressway and his helper died after the heavy vehicle crashed into a Rolls-Royce in Nuh on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the mangled luxury car went up in flames, but the three occupants had vacated it by then. They are undergoing treatment at Medanta – The Medicity in Gurgaon, according to cops.
Rampreet and Kuldeep, both from Alwar, were transporting diesel for generators at a construction site of the National Highways Authority of India.
Since the U-turn was at a distance, Rampreet decided to take the wrong side of the expressway to save some time and fuel. The tanker had reached Nagina when the Rolls-Royce – cruising at almost 120kmph from the Sohna side – crashed into it.
The tanker, the police said, landed on its side and skidded for a few metres before hitting the divider. The Rolls-Royce caught fire, but the occupants managed to evacuate.
The three who were in the car were identified as Delhi resident Vikas, and Divya and Tasveer from Chandigarh.
The Delhi-Mumbai expressway is an access-control speedway constructed to facilitate the seamless movement of vehicles. The speed on the stretch is 120kmph.
An FIR was registered against the tanker driver at Nagina police station under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (death by negligence) of the Inidan Penal Code.
