GURGAON: The greenbelt in Sector 5 is turning into a dumpyard, creating unhygienic conditions in the area. Piles of garbage can be seen strewn across the greenbelt near the Sector 5 police station, with stray animals scavenging through the waste, residents have alleged.
They say that those living in the nearby village and colonies often dump garbage in the greenbelt at odd hours. Though residents have cleared up the waste with the help of MCG in the past, the problem has plagued the area again in the last two months. Dinesh Vashisht, RWA president of sectors 3, 5 and 6, said that the greenbelt has degraded due to the unabashed dumping of garbage.
“If we find someone throwing garbage, we try to stop them, but they still dump waste here and nobody notices. Plants in the area have been died and now garbage can be seen all over the place. MCG removed garbage after repeated complaints but this is a recurring problem and so far, they haven’t been able to find a permanent solution. MCG should penalise those dumping waste in the open as it is also against the Swachh Bharat Mission,” he said.
Besides being an eyesore, the area is also detrimental to the environment and poses serious health risks, the residents said. “We cannot even walk in the area because of the awful stench. The greenbelt is in a state of utter neglect and despite several complaints, no action has been taken so far by the civic authorities,” said Ritu Chaudhary, a resident of Sector 5.
When contacted, MCG joint commissioner (Swacch Bharat Mission) Pradeep Kumar said, “We have received complaints over the poor performance of the waste concessionaire and have already served notice to the agency. However, it has also been observed that the tenants living in the villages are not willing to pay for door-to-door collection and instead throw garbage in the open. Meanwhile, I will get the complaint examined and the needful will be done.”
